Internationional Scientific Conference organized by the Librarian Association of Serbia was held September 25-27. The conference was initiatied and held with an significant effort by the Association's president PhD. Aleksandra Vranes.
We were able to watch many various presentations. The guests from UK, Hungary, Turkey, Italy, Bulgaria, Croatia, F.Y.R. Macedonia presented their presentations and exchanged their own experience about work and management of electronic libraries.

After the opening word by the representative of the Ministry of Culture, our first guest and key speaker, Mr Todd Cutler expressed his statement about new way of thinking - How to become a librarian 2.0.

Librarians are challenged by new t echnologies. His question was "Is there a better way?" to survive as a modern librarian.

After his lecture we enjoyed in lecture of Mr Rob Davies and his project about digital library Europeana.
Professor Serap Kurbanoglu from Ankara confronted book-readers and new googling generation, cut-and paste generation. She talked about influence of electronic age to information literacy, is everything that we found on the web really correct and useful?
The other teacher from Ankara was Mr Yasar Tonta, presented Web 2.0 and Library 2.0.

digital library and electronic library was shown by Marija Laslo,

a colleague from Osijek, Croatia . Amasing lecture!

Ivana Truccolo, a medical librarian from Aviano,
presented a CIGNO programm (still in process) for patients' education at the CRO Clinic. Patients can exchange their own experience using the programme as a tool which allow them to learn more about disease.

Colleagues from Bulgaria talked about web habits, and neccessary education of library staff as well as the students-users of electronic library, library 2.0 users.

Presentations of our colleagues from Serbia about Open Access were also interesting.

It was a real pleasure to hear two colleagues who presented electronic library in Gymnasium of Zemun.

Slavica Jankovic and Valentina Tasic are librarians in Gymnasium and we saw how one school library can follow new trends.

Rss feed aggregation was a topic of Mr Vedran Vucic, president of the GnuLinux Centre. He made several medical aggregators and shown how scientific articles could be selected and collected by key word using RSS feed. These aggregators are visited more than 20 000 times in approx 30 days.

Rob Davis is a qualified librarian who joined the British Council in 1978 and 1984-88 was Head of Stock Management Section of The British Council Libraries Department with responsibility for provision of bibliographic services and automated cataloguing to over 100 libraries worldwide. He worked overseas as head of libraries, books and information services for the British Council in Singapore and Indonesia (1978-1982) and Egypt (1987-1989). Since 1990 he has worked as an independent project manager, consultant and researcher, gaining wide experience of the library and information policy area and of technical and service developments in support of these, gradually expanding his expertise into ‘neighbouring’ sectors such as cultural heritage, Public Sector Information (PSI), eLearning and eGovernment, especially where the deployment of ICT is involved.

IS THERE A BETTER WAY?

As stated on the conference web site, ”Librarians are facing new challenges and new approaches by changing their old way of thinking and working to become a librarian 2.0.” This is also true of libraries in the United States. The successful ones are asking tough questions and rethinking library services. They are asking, “Is there a better way?”. For some libraries, their survival depends on challenging and changing their way old way of thinking. For the U.S. libraries, there are a variety of areas that have been improved using technology. I am fortunate enough to be involved in helping improve some of the areas. There are a variety of examples that show the before and after effects of improving library processes for staff as well as patrons. These examples and discussions are intended to be the impetus for librarians to look within their own library to determine, “Is there a better way?”.

Bačka Palanka Tour – September 28th, (Sunday) 2008

After three days of working programme, a visit to Bačka Palanka and Karađorđevo, has been organized for the participants of the ELECTRONIC LIBRARY Scientific Conference. In cooperation with ''Veljko Petrović'' public library from Bačka Palanka and with the help of Bačka Palanka municipality the participants will have the opportunity to get to know more about the cultural, historical and economic characteristics of this municipality, as well as about the natural resources of the region of South Bačka.

Classical guitar concert

Uros Dojcinovic is a professor of classical guitar at the Music Conservatory "J. Slavensky" in Belgrade.
The concert will be held Thursday in Pedagological museum at 20:00h.

Belgrade (Beograd) is the capital of Serbia, and has a population of around 1.6 million. It is situated in South-Eastern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and has since ancient times been an important focal point for traffic, an intersection of the roads of Eastern and Western Europe.

Belgrade is the capital of Serbian culture, education, science and economy. As a result of its tumultuous history, Belgrade has for centuries been home to many nationalities, with Serbs of the Orthodox Christian religion making up the majority of the population (90%). The official language is Serbian, while visitors from abroad can use English to communicate.

Belgrade is the centre of culture and art of Serbia. It is Belgrade where our most notable artists create, where over 9.000 theatrical performances, exhibitions, concerts, performance events, and other artistic programs are presented and where prominent authors in the world of art are hosted. Belgrade is the centre of the highest state and national institutions of culture and art: Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Library of Serbia, the National Museum, the National Theatre and the University of Arts.

It is Belgrade where the most significant works of architecture are located, with Kalemegdan accommodating the Belgrade Fortress, cultural monuments and other immovable cultural treasures. Numerous archeological sites with remnants of developed civilization and culture on Belgrade territory from prehistory until this day.

Belgrade, a city with a very tumultuous history, is one of the oldest cities in Europe. Its history lasts full 7,000 years. The area around two great rivers, the Sava and the Danube has been inhabited as early as palaeolithic period. Remains of human bones and skulls of Neanderthals, found in the stone-pit near Leštane, in a cave in Čukarica and near the Bajloni market, date back to the early Stone Age.

Remains of the late Stone Age culture have been found in Vinča, Žarkovo and in Upper Town, above the Sava and Dunav confluence.

Famous streets and Squares

In the inner area of the City of Belgrade there are over 5,500 streets, 16 plazas and 32 squares.
Republic Square (Trg Republike)

Knez Mihailova Street is a pedestrian zone and shopping center - protected by law as one of the oldest and most valuable monumental complexes of the city, with a large number of representative buildings and urban houses built at the end of 1870s. It is thought that in as early as the Roman times there was the center of the Singidunum settlement. In this area, at the time of Turks, there were winding streets with gardens, drinking-fountains and mosques. In the middle XIX century, in the upper part of the street was the garden of Knez Aleksandar Karađorđević.

Aeroport Nikola Tesla

Belgrade "Nikola Tesla" Airport is located some 20 km from Belgrade. Since Belgrade is a city of two million inhabitants, you would expect a much larger airport, but even this one seems to be big enough. It has only one runway, so delays of all sorts are not unexpected, but surprisingly rare. It is consisting of two buildings which are simply called Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

Transportation

If you don't have prearranged transfer (the option which I recommend warmly) you'll have to exchange your money at the airport, as the only acceptable currency is Dinar.

Transportation from the airport is questionable, since you don't have much choice. There are taxis, which should be around 10-15 Euros for ride and some additional money for your luggage (per piece) that is where problems can occur, so be sure that taxi driver tells you price for the luggage BEFORE you enter the vehicle. Not to mention that the taximeter should be turned on - do not accept any bargains.

The other possibility is the bus of the JAT Airways, but it's timetable is depending on its carrier's flight schedule, so check if there is some flight near your time of arrival. The bus goes through New Belgrade to Slavija Square (pronounced as "Slaviya"), which is in wider territory of city center.
